Our Story

Carpet Services (Cardiff) Ltd was founded in 1963, when Peter Mynett began the business from his home, focusing on domestic sales in the Taffs Well area. Very soon the workforce increased as business blossomed, compelling the opening of the retail shop, now a well-known land-mark in the main street of Taffs Well.

By the early 70’s, the company had secured contracts throughout the Rhondda and Cardiff areas with Local Co-Op Stores and other retail outlets. Before long the tempo of growth within the company quickened by the decision to move into contract work with Local Authorities, which is when the company moved its stocks to Upper Boat Trading Estate. From this base the contract trade rapidly gained momentum.

Today, although Peter has retired, Carpet Services is run by his son Anthony and daughter Sue, with fully trained staff, to City and Guilds NVQ Level 2 and 3.

Everyone is united in maintaining the company ideals of customer service, value for money, and top quality products.

OUR TEAM

Anthony Mynett

Director

As a director of Carpet Services, Anthony’s main duties are monitoring the daily performance of the company using over 30 years of trade knowledge. Starting at 12 years of age, Anthony would use any spare time and school holidays to help the family business, labouring on various projects including the Pope’s visit to Cardiff, experiencing different skills and techniques. Once out of full-time education, he had gained enough knowledge in that time to carry out basic floor laying unsupervised and immediately began full time employment. His development led him into management, where he became of director of Carpet Services at 21 years of age having served his floor laying apprenticeship.

Having spent much of his employment working on the commercial side of the business, Anthony’s interests remained in that sector slowly expanding the company client base towards larger projects, developing relationships with clients which still remain today. In 2002, he and Ray Gallivan started an NVQ assessment centre within the company, which involved assessing and verifying employees, in house, through NVQ levels 2 and 3 in floor covering. This eventually provided all employees to obtain certification in either level 2 and 3, through their supervision.

Coupled with the expanding commercial business, he recognised the requirement of a larger company base to accommodate stock levels, quality office work space and a more adequate location, which eventually lead to the purchase of Unit 2. After overseeing the refurbishment of Unit 2, to a purpose-built facility, Anthony’s experience and dedication has insured the company success continues. He has introduced CS Flooring Solutions, the commercial arm of the business, to service existing and new clients. He has attended many work-related courses with Altro Floors, Ardex, Forbo flooring, Polyflor to name a few. Additional health and safety legislation led to training in with Construction Skills Wales and CITB. Over the past 18 months, with assistance from XBA Business Finance, he has restructured the working systems and management process of the company which has ensured the business will further develop and remain a success.

Sue Reid

Director

After being raised above our retail shop in Taff's Well and with both parents working full time in developing the business, Sue was always aware of flooring products and joined the company in 1987 - following experiences in insurance underwriting, administration in a platinum refinery in South Africa, and a few years of living outside Wales.

At first, Sue worked within the contract team, administrating government contracts along with construction and commercial projects. She then became responsible training for all staff via
Build a Better Business and Investors in People and introducing a company apprenticeship/trainee scheme. The scheme has continued for over 30 years, allowing employees to obtain certification in NVQ level 2 and 3. Sue continues to work with the Construction Industry Training Board to maintain this level of support.

Sue became Company Secretary and a Director in 1997, whilst running our retail shop in Taff's Well, passing on her experience of carpet and vinyl products and ensuring our customer service was maintained.

In 2017, she returned to the contract division working on projects for schools, care homes and offices, along with overseeing staff, their welfare, administration and accounts.

Lee Minton

Retail Manager

Lee has over 33 years experience in the flooring trade.

In 1990 he started in his family business, working for 15 years as a fitter and learning all aspects of fitting carpet and vinyl in residential and commercial premises. He was then brought into their shop for a further 10 years, helping customers and guiding them on their journey to choosing a product and giving the complete service.

When his father retired and the family business closed, Lee moved onto the opportunity to work at Carpet Services in 2017. He now manages our retail shop in Taff’s Well. He has all the experience and knowledge to help customers with hard decisions in any choice of flooring; carpet, vinyl, LVT, linoleum, laminate, clic and wood products.

He is the one point of contact, measuring and planning everything from start to finish, and giving competitive prices to beat the bigger stores.

Ray Gallivan

Contract Manager

Ray has a broad knowledge of the flooring sector having gained over 45 years’ experience, starting his career as a floor layer and progressing to Contract Manager to oversee many fitting teams. He has carried out projects in many areas of the private and public sector, using products such as carpets, vinyl, wood and linoleum, together with the subfloor preparation and testing required to facilitate this work.

He understands the need to work to deadlines and delivery targets, with a customer focus on meeting expectations and has a day-to-day contact with many large construction and Private companies, following the contract from tender stage right to completion and final accounts. To do this he has gained the knowledge in the use of estimating programs and drawings to finalise a competitive tender submission.

Ray was instrumental in setting up the company as an NVQ training centre, with CITB, for apprentices and experienced workers to gain the knowledge and NVQ Level 2 and 3 certification that is required to have a successful career in the flooring industry.

His current duties include the control of the Health and Safety for the company and all the employees, preparing risk assessments, method statements and COSHH after gaining his NEBOSH Construction Certificate.

Whilst working at CS Flooring Ray has gained ILM Level 4 certification in Management which led to an Environment Management in Construction.

Outside of work, Ray enjoyed playing rugby, coaching and coach tutoring but recently retired from the sport to take up the more sedate game of lawn bowls!
